If you’re looking to have some work done on your roof, you probably have some questions. We’re always happy to chat through your ideas and answer any questions in person or over the phone, but we thought it would be useful to put together some of the more frequently asked questions (and their answers).
If My Roof Is Leaking, Do I Need To Get It Replaced?
Not necessarily. Many roof leaks are the result of a loose or broken roof tile, which means we can fix it fairly easily without needing to replace the whole roof. The only reason we would need to do a complete roof re-fit is if the whole system has failed, or if the roof was very unsafe – and we would always talk to you about that before doing anything.
Will I Have To Move Out If My Roof Is Being Repaired?
You can usually stay in your home while your roof is being repaired, and we will make every effort to ensure the area is safe and waterproof during the work. There are some occasions, like if the roof is very structurally unsafe when we would need you to move out – but that’s very rare.
Can I Jet Wash My Roof?
You can, but it’s really not recommended. High-powered jet washers can actually cause damage to your roof tiles, stripping away the protective layers and knocking slates loose. At Willingtons we never recommend jet-washing your roof, and instead, clean it in a safe and non-damaging way.
How Long Do Felt Roofs Last?
The lifespan of your felt roof will depend on the quality of materials used for it, as well as which way the roof faces in relation to the sun. At Willingtons we use only the best quality materials, and our felt roof systems last around 20 years.
Do You Need To Put Up Scaffolding To Clean My Gutters?
If we’re just cleaning gutters then we don’t normally need to erect scaffolding. The only exceptions are if it becomes unsafe for us to use our own equipment.
Can You Claim Roof Repair On House Insurance?
Sometimes. This one really depends on your insurance policy, and what the cause of the damage was. Full coverage for roof repairs is fairly rare in this country, but you may be able to claim part of the repair cost from your insurance company. We recommend checking the fine print on your policy to be sure.
How Long Should My Roof Last?
Generally speaking, most roofing systems should last around 20 years before they need any significant repairs or replacements. But there are a lot of materials (like slate, metal or clay tiles) that can last a lot longer. That’s why it’s so important to consider the materials when choosing a new roof. A reputable roofing company will offer a warranty on any work they do, so be sure to ask about that too!
